Chandigarh Police has formed an SIT on the orders of Punjab and Haryana High Court in the case of assault on Army Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath by Punjab Police officers in Patiala. 2015 batch IPS officer Manjeet Sheoran has been made the head of the SIT.

Three other members have been included in the SIT. These members will include a DSP, an inspector and a sub-inspector. This investigation will be completed in about four months. In this case, the colonel’s family had filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. They also demanded a CBI investigation into the matter. The family said that they do not trust the investigation of Punjab Police.

Colonel Bath Assault Case

An army colonel was assaulted on the night of 13-14 March in Patiala. The police did not take any action then. After this, when the matter reached the Defense Ministry and Army Headquarters, the police registered a by-name FIR 9 days later and suspended 12 policemen. This also includes 5 inspectors. 21 days have passed since this incident, but Punjab Police is busy saving its own accused employees.

Colonel Bath had told that when he started the car and started leaving, those people started breaking the car by hitting it with sticks and rods. Meanwhile, the son’s friend told the entire conversation to the Colonel’s wife over the phone. After this, the Colonel and his son were admitted to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. Where the Colonel’s left hand was found fractured.

Issue raised in the Assembly

The issue of hooliganism done by the employees of Punjab Police with Colonel Bath was raised in the Punjab Assembly during the budget session. The opposition surrounded the AAP government of Punjab in the Assembly and told how the law and order is being torn apart in Punjab.

Former army officers staged a protest in Patiala. BJP leaders of Patiala met SSP Nanak Singh and demanded appropriate action in the matter. As soon as the matter was raised in the Assembly, a new FIR was registered and an SIT was formed. Also, the family was given security.
