Chandigarh: The Municipal Corporation has geared up to deal with any emergency in Chandigarh, especially the blackout. The Municipal Corporation has decided to start a 24-hour control room after holding a high-level meeting. This decision was announced by Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla and Commissioner Amit Kumar during a meeting with the councillors and officials of the corporation.
It was decided in the meeting that the responsibility of switching off the manually operated street lights in the city will now be of the councillors of the respective wards. For this, they will also be given training if needed. Along with the councillors, the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) has also been asked to cooperate.
As a part of the preparation for the blackout, instructions have been given to keep the street lights of parks, V-5 and V-6 roads off regularly. So that there is no delay in switching off the power in the city at the time of crisis. According to the information, there are more than 50 thousand street lights in Chandigarh at present, out of which about 1800 lights are running on a manual system.
The corporation has issued the telephone number 0172-2787200 for the blackout control room. The responsibility of this control room has been given to SDE Rudesh Kumar. At the same time, SE (horticulture) has been appointed as the nodal officer to monitor all the preparations related to the blackout. This officer will monitor the switching off of solar and street lights on time as well as sounding the siren when necessary.
