Before taking oath, during NDA Parliamentary meeting, Prime Minister of the country for the third time, Narendra Modi remembered the late Parkash Singh Badal, the five-time Chief Minister of Punjab. He said in the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting that Prakash Singh Badal’s contribution to NDA has been very important. However, the alliance broke due to the farmers’ movement.

This time they fought the elections alone

This time Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP were fully prepared to contest the Lok Sabha elections together. A round of meetings had also started in both the parties. But before the election dates were announced, the farmers’ movement had started again. Apart from this, there were many issues like the releasing of imprisoned Sikhs. On which there was no consensus between the two parties. After this, both the parties decided to contest the elections on their own. Both the parties fielded their candidates on all 13 seats. However, before this, both had also contested the 2022 assembly elections alone.

If they had fought together, they could have won 5 seats

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the results of the Akali Dal and BJP have been very poor compared to the previous years. BJP has not won a single seat in the state. Whereas Shiromani Akali Dal has managed to save its Bathinda seat. From here, Harsimrat Kaur, wife of party chief Sukhbir Badal, has become an MP for the fourth time. However, if we look at the election results, if these two parties had contested the elections together, they could have won five seats.

Because the number of votes received on these seats is much more than the winning candidates. These seats include Gurdaspur, Patiala, Ludhiana, Ferozepur and Amritsar. However, Shiromani Akali Dal leaders are also admitting that the decision to contest separately was wrong. Akali leader Prof. Prem Singh Chandumajra says that our condition has become like NOTA. If we had formed an alliance, we might have won. Whereas in the 2019 elections, both the parties had won four seats.
