Amritsar: During the ongoing war against drugs in Amritsar, Punjab, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police has arrested an accused who was smuggling drugs from across the border. Drug money along with heroin worth Rs 25 crore has also been recovered from the accused. The accused was in direct contact with drug smugglers from Pakistan.
Amritsar Police has arrested Gurmej Singh, a resident of Bhindi Saidan Ajnala, with 3.5 kg of heroin. Heroin was seized, and a cross-border drug smuggling network was busted. CP Amritsar Ranjit Singh Dhillon said that drug money worth Rs 1 lakh has also been recovered from his possession. Apart from recovering the consignment of heroin, police teams have also seized a bike on which the accused was riding.
CP Ranjit Singh Dhillon said that the accused Gurmej Singh was in direct contact with a Pakistan-based drug smuggler and was smuggling drugs. He said that drones are being used to transport drug consignments from Pakistan. He said that investigations are being conducted to establish backwards and forward links in this case.
Sharing details of the operation, the Commissioner of Police (CP) said that the police teams had received reliable information that drug smuggler Gurmej Singh had recovered a consignment of drugs and was waiting to give it to someone in the Chheharta area. He informed that acting promptly on the input, the police team, including Thana Chheharta, under the supervision of DCP Investigation Harpreet Singh Mander, ADCP City-2 Abhimanyu Rana, and ACP West Sukhpal Singh, have succeeded in arresting the accused. The accused has been arrested from the Ghanpur Kale area by laying a trap in a planned manner.
He informed me that two cases have already been registered against the accused. In 2012, he had lodged a Pakistani smuggler at his house, and for the second time in 2021, 15 kg of heroin was recovered from him. In this regard, a case has been registered under NDPS at Chheharta police station in Amritsar.
