An encounter broke out between the Jalandhar Rural Police and a gangster this morning. The incident took place when the police tried to stop a youth going on a bike to supply weapons. Seeing himself trapped, the accused opened fire on the police party.
In retaliation, the police also opened fire, injuring the accused. According to the information, when the police tried to stop the vehicle, the youth started firing. The police immediately took charge and fired in self-defense, which hit the accused’s leg. He was immediately admitted to the hospital.
The arrested accused has been identified as Sajan Nayyar, a resident of Amritsar. According to the police, Sajan Nayyar already has 20 criminal cases registered against him, including robbery, arms smuggling and serious crimes.
Initial investigation has revealed that Sajan Nayyar was supplying illegal weapons in various districts of Punjab. The police is now interrogating him as to whom and why he was supplying these weapons.
Police officials said that a case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections and investigation into his network is underway.
