Farmers not backing down as protest at Ladowal toll plaza continues for fourth day

Protesting farmers are also getting help in the form of food and drink from the surrounding villages.

Ludhiana: Ladowal, the most expensive toll plaza in Punjab, has been closed for the last 72 hours. The protest against the hiked toll price has entered fourth day. More than 1 lakh vehicles have passed without paying toll tax. NHAI has suffered a loss of about Rs 3 crore. NHAI is proving helpless in coordinating with the protesting farmers.

The farmers are adamant on their demand that the toll should be Rs 150 per vehicle, but NHAI officials are ignoring the demands of the farmers. The number of farmers is gradually increasing at the Ladowal toll plaza.

The number of protesters is increasing daily. Farmers are also getting help in the form of food and drink from the surrounding villages. Some farmers go to work in the fields in shifts. After finishing work, they join the protest.

People need to come out of their homes

Dilbagh Singh, head of the Bharatiya Kisan Mazdoor Union, said that today people need to come out of their homes. The loot being done by NHAI should be stopped. The driver going from Ludhiana to Phillaur has to pay Rs 425, which is a robbery on people’s pockets.

Farmers are not going to back down

Dilbagh Singh said that he had spoken to the officials a day before and submitted a memorandum of demands but no one tried to find a solution. Even if the central government resorts to lathicharge etc., the farmers are not going to back down, he added. The convoy of people protesting at Ladowal toll plaza is continuously increasing.
