Jalandhar: The police on Tuesday arrested the car driver who hit 114-year-old athlete Fauja Singh in Jalandhar, Punjab. The accused has been identified as NRI Amritpal Singh Dhillon (30), a resident of Dasupur village in Kartarpur. Amritpal Singh had returned from Canada just 8 days ago.
The police have also recovered a Fortuner (PB 20C 7100) from him. He was brought to the Bhogpur police station on Tuesday night, where he was questioned. He will be produced in court today.
Fauja Singh was taken to a private hospital in Jalandhar in critical condition on July 14. He died there. His last rites have not been performed yet. Family members say that their sons, daughters and other relatives are coming from Canada. The last rites will be performed only after their arrival.
The NRI had bought the car from a person from Kapurthala
The team formed by Jalandhar SSP Harvinder Singh Virk had listed out some vehicles. One of them, a Fortuner car, was identified late Tuesday evening. The number revealed that the car was registered in the name of Varinder Singh, a resident of Athauli village in Kapurthala.
After which, Jalandhar police teams left for Kapurthala and reached Varinder. During interrogation of Varinder Singh, it was revealed that Amritpal Singh Dhillon, an NRI from Canada, had bought his car. Amritpal’s father has passed away, he has 3 sisters and his mother lives in Canada.
After the incident, the accused reached Kartarpur via village after village.
The police arrested Amritpal late Tuesday night and recovered the car. After the accident, Amritpal went straight to his village Dasupur. During interrogation, Amritpal confessed his crime.
Amritpal told that he was returning from Mukerian side after selling his phone. When he reached near Beas Pind, an old man came under his car. He did not know that the old man was Fauja Singh. When the news started coming late at night, the news of Fauja Singh’s death came to light.
