In a major crackdown on corruption, Punjab’s Fazilka SSP Varinder Singh Brar has been suspended. SSP Brar was suspended because he was failing to take action against four police officials caught red-handed in a bribery case.

The action follows the arrest of Fazilka Cyber Cell SHO Manjit Singh, and Senior Constables Rajpal, Shinderpal Singh, and Sumit Kumar by the Vigilance Bureau. These officials were accused of threatening to register a cybercrime case against a 17-year-old boy who had accidentally clicked a pornographic link.
Exploiting the situation, they allegedly demanded a ₹1 lakh bribe from the family, having already confiscated the minor’s mobile phone.

Yesterday, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema revealed that the family, under pressure, paid the bribe but later approached the Chief Minister with evidence. Acting swiftly, the Vigilance Bureau set a trap and nabbed the officers red-handed.

The suspension of SSP Brar comes amidst a larger anti-corruption drive by the Punjab government. So far, 7 officers have been suspended and 1 MLA, Raman Arora, arrested. The government appears committed to holding even high-ranking officials accountable, sending a clear message against institutional corruption.
