Jalandhar: A day ahead of the Jalandhar Civic polls Half-day holiday has been declared in all government and non-government schools-colleges in Jalandhar district today, i.e on December 20. The holiday of half-day has been declared in view of the elections of Municipal Corporation/Municipal Councils/Municipal Panchayats. The order of holiday has been issued by the office of the Deputy Commissioner.
The Election Commission has already declared a holiday in Punjab for the elections of five municipal corporations and 41 municipal councils on December 21. The Commission has declared a public holiday in all government offices under the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881 wherever elections are being held.
Government employees and other workers, who are voters of municipal corporations but work at some other place, will be given special leave as per the rules. Holidays have also been declared in those schools whose buildings are being used for elections.
Apart from this, the areas having municipal elections under the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1958 and the Factories Act 1948 on December 21, 2024, have been declared as ‘close day’ so that the employees of shops, factories and business establishments located in these areas can cast their votes. The jurisdiction of the municipal corporations where elections are being held on December 21 has been declared as “dry day”.
