Demand for consular and legal assistance
Harsimrat Kaur Badal also urged the government to provide consular and legal assistance to Amritpal and his family in this difficult time. She said that this is a humanitarian matter and quick intervention is necessary.
Background of the incident
Amritpal Singh, who is said to be mentally unsound, recently crossed the border into Pakistan, where he was detained in Punjab province. It is being said that he took this step under mental pressure. The family is now pleading with the Indian government for his safe return.
Possibility of diplomatic efforts
Although there has been no official response from the Ministry of External Affairs yet, Indian citizens who crossed the border on humanitarian grounds have been brought back through consular intervention in the past as well.
