High Court seeks response from government and FCI over delayed purchase of paddy

The High Court has ordered to file the reply at the next hearing in this regard.

Chandigarh: Accusing the Punjab government of not yet starting the procurement of paddy, a public interest petition has been filed. It said that if the crops are not procured on time, then farmers will not be paid for their crops on time and if this happens, then there will be delay in repayment of loans taken from formal and informal sources for the crops. The petition has expressed concern of farmers and urged attention to the matter.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has sought a response from the Punjab government and FCI on this petition. The petition has been filed by a person named Sonpreet Singh. It is stated directions should be issued to remove last year’s paddy crop from warehouses and make room for the new paddy crop of 2024-25. The Punjab government and the Food Corporation of India (FCI) have been ordered to respond by HC.

In the petition, it has been stated that the Punjab government has not yet started procurement of the paddy. During the hearing, the state lawyer said that the government is in the process of initiating the procurement. The High Court has ordered to file the reply at the next hearing in this regard.

Protests are going on by different unions of farmers because of the poor paddy recruitment. Farmers have blocked Rail, and highways, and made Toll Plazas free in protest of the Punjab Government.
