Jalandhar, July 4: Jalandhar district has achieved a significant milestone as it has bagged first prize in the country (Zone II) under NITI Aayog’s Aspirational Blocks Programme (ABP), earning a development grant of Rs.1.5 crore for further improving key parameters under this project in Shahkot.
Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal presented the district’s achievements during a video conference with NITI Aayog officials, detailing the focused interventions made to uplift Shahkot’s performance across key parameters. Later, Shahkot Block was officially declared as the top-performing aspirational block in the country (Zone II).
“This award money will be spent on development work across various sectors in the block, including health, education, nutrition, agriculture, and basic infrastructure,” Dr. Aggarwal said, adding that the district administration is committed to transforming Shahkot from an “Aspirational Block” into an “Inspirational Block.”
The Deputy Commissioner attributed this success to a slew of initiatives undertaken in Shahkot over the past few months, which resulted in a marked improvement in performance indicators. These efforts included ensuring screening of BP, Sugar patients, establishment of nutrition gardens, anemia eradication, strengthening farmers Producers organizations, 100 percent collection of soil health cards, health services, leveraging technology for monitoring schemes, increasing participation of local communities, and addressing challenges through targeted action plans.
Dr. Aggarwal also thanked the Government of Punjab for its continuous guidance and support, enabling Shahkot to achieve this prestigious milestone. Likewise, he also hailed the teamwork of Jalandhar Administration’s officials, which yielded fruitful results through this top ranking.
About the Aspirational Blocks Programme (ABP):
It is notable that the Government of India launched the Aspirational Blocks Programme on January 7, 2023, during the 2nd National Conference of Chief Secretaries. The programme aims to improve governance and enhance the quality of life in India’s remotest and underdeveloped blocks, focusing on uplifting them through measurable and sustainable development.
The DC noted that this recognition will further motivate officials to continue innovative and citizen-centric governance to bring visible change in Shahkot and other areas of Jalandhar district.
