Jalandhar: Woman attempts self-immolation over land dispute

When the woman set herself on fire, the people around immediately informed the police. After which the police of Maksuda police station reached the crime scene for investigation.

Due to a land dispute in Jalandhar, Punjab, a woman tried to commit suicide by setting herself on fire while standing on the banks of the river in village of Isapur. This incident took place near the Isapur canal in village Maksudan police station. According to the information received, the said woman was having a land dispute for a long time. When the woman set herself on fire, the people around immediately informed the police. After which the police of Maksuda police station reached the crime scene for investigation.

According to the information received, the land dispute had increased a lot and both the parties were claiming their right on the land. On Tuesday evening around 4:30 pm, a woman named Surjit Kaur, wife of late Surati resident Isapur Jalandhar said that she has a share in the land, which she is not getting. Karnail Singh of the other party came 6 to 7 days ago with his companions with a tractor to forcibly sow seeds on the land.

Surjit Kaur told that she had complained to the police but no one listened to her. She said that this is why she set herself on fire. She went to the fields and stood near a fire nearby and set herself on fire, which spread quickly. The woman tried hard to extinguish the fire with the soil lying in the fields, but the fire kept increasing. Finally, the woman jumped into the water tank, which extinguished the fire. Injured Surjit Kaur was admitted to Jalandhar Civil Hospital for treatment. The police reached the civil hospital to know the condition of Surjit Kaur and to take her statement.
