Chandigarh: Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan has made an emotional appeal to farmers, urging them not to block Punjab’s highways and hamper state’s progress. Reiterating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s unwavering support to the farmers’ demands, Sandhwan stressed on the adverse effects of prolonged road blockades on Punjab’s economy, industry and employment opportunities for the youth.

“The people of Punjab and the state government have always stood by the farmers, be it the fight against the three black laws or during the Modi government’s plan to convert stadiums into jails for farmers. However, Punjab has suffered a lot due to the continuous closure of highways. Our industries, businesses and youth are the victims,” Sandhwan said.

He stressed that the closure of roads is hindering industrial development and trade, which are essential for job creation and curbing the menace of drugs. “Punjab’s fight against drugs cannot be successful by simply arresting or punishing the smugglers. We must also provide employment opportunities for our youth. When the youth get employment, they will naturally stay away from drugs,” he added.

Sandhwan stressed the need to keep Punjab’s highways open to ensure smooth movement of goods and raw materials, which are crucial for boosting agro-based industries and the economy. “We are already seeing the damage. For example, last year, basmati rice prices fell significantly, causing huge financial losses to farmers and traders. Similarly, the closure of roads has affected vegetable growers and small businesses,” he said.

Directly appealing to the farmers’ unions, he said, “Your demands, like MSP, are legitimate but are related to the central government. We request you to take your struggle to Delhi and protest against the BJP government there. Let us keep Punjab’s highways and trade routes open so that our industries and economy can grow. Together, we can ensure the progress of Punjab while meeting the demands of the farmers.”
