Chandigarh: The State Election Commission can announce the schedule of Municipal Corporation and Municipal Council elections (Nikay Chunav) in Punjab anytime. The government has told the commission that the elections will be held by the end of December. Now after SAD, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has written a letter to the Election Commission in this matter.
It has also been said that Shahidi Pakhwada is being celebrated from 12 December to 31 December and Prakash Parv of Guru Govind Singh is being celebrated on 6 January. In such a situation, these holy days should be kept in mind while making the schedule of municipal elections. People participate in them a lot in large numbers across the state. In such a situation, people will be inconvenienced and the sanctity of these important rituals will be disturbed. In such a situation, voting will also be affected.

Srinivasulu said that I want to draw your attention to the importance of the period from 12 December to 31 December with all due respect which is celebrated as “Shaheedi Pakhwada”. During this time the people of Punjab remember the unparalleled sacrifices of Mata Gujri Ji and Sahibzadas of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. These are sacred days of deep religious significance, with widespread participation in commemorative events.
Guru Parv of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji is celebrated on 6 January 2025, and it is highly respected throughout Punjab. During this time, millions of devotees are engaged in spiritual activities, as most people do not even organize private functions like marriage.
Holding local body elections during this holy period will cause inconvenience to the people of Punjab and the sanctity of these important rituals will be disturbed. Earlier, the Shiromani Akali Dal had demanded from the State Election Commission that the civic elections should not be held at the end of December.
