Man Murdered in Begowal, Punjab Over Loan Dispute; Couple Charged with Homicide

A young man was murdered in the Begowal region of Kapurthala, Punjab, after he demanded the return of ₹40,000 he had lent. The Begowal police have registered a homicide case against a couple and initiated further actions.

In a statement to the police, Kulwant Singh, a retired Army personnel residing in village Nangal Lubana, disclosed that his nephew, Manpreet Singh, also a farmer in the same village, often shared his worries with him. About two months ago, Manpreet informed him that he had lent ₹40,000 to Gurpreet Singh and had requested the money multiple times without success. There was even a written agreement regarding the loan.

On November 1, Manpreet visited Kulwant, and they decided to confront Gurpreet Singh about the money. While on their way, they encountered Gurpreet Singh and his wife, Ramanpreet Kaur, who were lingering in the alley. A dispute ensued when Manpreet questioned Gurpreet about the loan.

Gurpreet Singh and his wife began hurling abuses at Manpreet, and thereafter, Ramanpreet started a physical altercation. In a sudden escalation, Gurpreet retrieved a sharp weapon from his house and assaulted Manpreet, striking him multiple times on the head.

Despite Kulwant’s efforts to intervene, Gurpreet continued the assault until Manpreet collapsed from his injuries. Kulwant and his brother, Lakhwinder Singh, rushed the injured Manpreet to a civil hospital in Bhulath, where the doctors deemed his condition critical. He was subsequently referred to Kapoorthala and then to Amritsar for treatment, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.

The Begowal police have registered a case of murder against Gurpreet Singh and Ramanpreet Kaur, and efforts to apprehend the couple are underway following the young man’s death over the money dispute.
