Amritsar: Police has imposed 8 sections on the accused who tried to break the statue of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar on Heritage Road in Amritsar, Punjab. Police produced him in the court and took him on four-day remand and will now question him till January 30. Aam Aadmi Party minister Kuldeep Dhaliwal says that the police itself will investigate the matter and make public the story behind the entire incident.

The police had registered an FIR in this case on January 26 itself. However, initially the FIR was registered in the name of unknown person until the name was not clear and later the name of Akashdeep, a resident of Moga, was added to it.

The police took action and registered a case against the accused under eight sections-

  • BNS 333- Entering jurisdiction and attacking
  • BNS 299- Deliberate insult to religious beliefs
  • BNS 326(f)- Damaging property under mischief
  • BNS 324(4) – Intentional mischief
  • BNS 196- Doing things which increase enmity between groups on the basis of religion, caste etc.
  • Apart from these five sections, a case has been registered under sections 3,4,5 of the SC-ST Act.

Protests across Punjab today

After the damage to Dr. Ambedkar’s statue, a call for a complete bandh was given by the Dalit community in Amritsar on Monday. Today, Tuesday, a bandh has been called by the Dalit community in many districts of the state. The entire community wants to find out who is behind the accused of this incident.

At the same time, Amritsar police has assured that interrogation of the accused is going on. The remand of the accused has been taken till 30 January. During this time, whatever information comes out on the basis of interrogation of the accused will be shared.

A high-level investigation into the incident is ongoing

Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that a high-level investigation is underway into the incident and strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty in this case. He said that some mischievous elements want to spread hatred in Punjab and are conspiring to disrupt the peace of the state, but the government will never let their efforts succeed.

Cabinet Minister Aman Arora said that Punjab is the land of saints and our Guru Sahiban have always given the message of ending casteism and discrimination. The people of Punjab will never let the mutual brotherhood and harmony break and will give a befitting reply to the mischievous elements who spread hatred in the society.
