Mass vaccination campaign starts in Punjab to prevent lumpy skin disease

Punjab Government is starting a large-scale vaccination campaign from February 25 to protect cattle from lumpy skin disease.

Chandigarh : Punjab Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian said on Saturday that the Punjab government is starting a large-scale vaccination campaign from February 25 to protect cattle from lumpy skin disease.

The minister said that 25 lakh doses of goat pox vaccine have been purchased by the state from Telangana State Veterinary Biological and Research Institute, Hyderabad at a cost of Rs 78.75 lakh. He said that the vaccine has been sent to all the districts by Punjab State Veterinary Vaccine Institute, Ludhiana.

Under this campaign, this vaccine will be administered free of cost to all the cattle of the state including the cattle ponds and private cow sheds run by the state government. Mr. Khuddian said that to complete this vaccination campaign smoothly, Joint Director R. D.D.L., Jalandhar has been posted as nodal officer.

Apart from setting up a control room at the state level, the Punjab Animal Husbandry Department has also set up district level control rooms in the offices of the Deputy Directors of the Animal Husbandry Department. He said that this booster dose of goat pox vaccine is being administered for the third time to prevent this disease.

He also asked the department officials to make solid arrangements for the cold chain for the vaccine and to make the animal farmers aware about the benefits of the vaccination drive.
