A multi-storey building collapsed in Sector 17 of Chandigarh on Monday morning at 7 am. This building was vacant for a long time. However, there has been no loss of life in the accident. Administration officials themselves are present on the spot. DC office and famous showroom are located near it. According to the information, this building was built around 1970.
This building is located at the prime location of the city. According to the people, this building was 5 storeys. They told that when this building collapsed, it felt as if there was a blast. Panic spread for some time.
The administration had got the building sealed
People present on the spot said that construction work was going on in the building for about 2 months. Due to this, cracks appeared in the building. As soon as the matter came to the notice of the administration, the building was sealed on December 27.
People said – contractor absconded
According to eyewitnesses, after the sealing action, the contractor working on the building absconded. The owners of the adjacent building said that proper steps were not taken during the renovation. Due to this, their buildings have also been damaged.
Building was given on rent
SHO Rohit of Sector-17 Chandigarh Police Station, who reached the spot, said that the building collapsed at 7:15 am. The owner of the building had given it on rent. Its renovation work was being done by the tenant. The building was declared unsafe. The matter is being investigated. So far no action has been taken against the contractor or anyone else.
