Punjab: The Punjab Police’s counter-intelligence team apprehended a “notorious” drug smuggler and his accomplice following a brief encounter today. The smuggler, identified as Bhupinder Singh, also known as Sonu Kangla, has around 30 criminal cases against him across Amritsar and other regions of the state.
The arrests took place near Khara village, where Kangla and his associate, Sarbjeet Singh—also referred to as Babu Saab and Naath—were traveling in a jeep. According to Lakhbir Singh, the Additional Inspector General of Counter-Intelligence, a police team led by Inspector Satish Kumar had set up a checkpoint on the Kotkapura-Muktsar road.
When a Thar vehicle approached from the Muktsar side and was signaled to stop, its occupants opened fire on the police and attempted to escape. The counter-intelligence team pursued the vehicle, initially firing into the air before targeting the tires. The vehicle eventually stopped, and both men tried to flee into the fields but were apprehended by the police.
Authorities seized a USA-made .32 caliber pistol and an empty magazine from them, leading to their arrest. Notably, Kangla had previously escaped from police custody in Amritsar on June 8, 2015, while being transported back to Nabha jail after a court hearing; he had been arrested by the Amritsar police in October 2012.
