Chandigarh: Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has passed the Punjab Panchayati Raj Amendment Bill 2024. This is the first bill passed by him after becoming the Governor of Punjab which was approved during monsoon session. After the passing of this bill, the process of panchayati elections will be accelerated.
This will further help the government to conduct elections to 13,241 panchayats in the state next month. The government is keen to hold panchayat elections in mid-October, which will be followed by panchayat samiti and zilla parishad elections.
The new governor has given the green light to the first bill of his tenure. During the monsoon session, the House also amended the ‘Punjab Panchayati Rules, 1994’. After this amendment, no candidate will be able to contest on the party symbol. It is not necessary to get approval from the Governor. The approval of the amendment bill by the governor has given relief to the state government and paved the way for panchayat elections.
With the amendment in Section 12 (4) of the ‘Punjab Panchayati Raj Act, 1994’, a new roster of reservations will be prepared by considering the block as a unit for the reservation of Sarpanches, whereas earlier the district was considered as a unit.
