Amritsar: On the night of Diwali, the pollution level in Punjab reached dangerous levels. Pollution has reached at orange level in most of the cities, that is, GRAP-1 situation has come into force here. People celebrated the festival of Diwali yesterday and firecrackers were burst in the night. Following this the AQI crossed the mark of 500 and sparked major concern related to Air pollution.
The Punjab government had already limited the time for burning firecrackers during Diwali for pollution control but it doesn’t seem to show any difference as firecrackers were burst all night.
According to government instructions, the time for burning firecrackers on Diwali is from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm only. There is also a provision for legal action against those who violate this rule. But, despite this, the firecrackers which started in the evening continued till late at night.
Late-night AQI was recorded between 400 to 500 in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Khanna, Ludhiana and Mandi Gobindgarh. Not only this, the average AQI of these cities has also been recorded between 200 to 300.
AQI was recorded in the dangerous category in cities like Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, and Patiala. Harmful gases and dust particles emitted due to firecrackers significantly deteriorated the air quality. According to experts, the level of pollutants like PM2.5 and PM10 increased several times more than normal at this time, increasing the risk of problems like breathing, asthma, and heart disease.
