Chandigarh: Voting for by-elections on four assembly seats in Punjab is scheduled for November 13. But now there is a demand to change this date. Senior Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa has written a letter to the Election Commission on this matter. He has argued in the letter that 15 November is the Prakash Parv of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Prakash Parv lasts for 3 days, which starts with Akhand Path Sahib on November 13. Voting is to be held on the same day. Citing religious reasons, he urged the commission to consider changing the date of the elections.
I have written to the @ECISVEEP requesting a postponement of the Punjab byelections on November 13, as they coincide with the sacred celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth anniversary. This will ensure that people can observe their religious duties and participate fully in the… pic.twitter.com/DHIds00ue4

Bajwa has said in the letter that Prakash Parv has a spiritual connection of Sikh community as well as Hindus and other religious groups. He has said that in such a situation there is a possibility that voting may be affected. During this time most of the people will be involved in religious rituals in gurudwaras and their homes, which will reduce their ability to fully participate in democratic practice on the day of elections.
He has also argued that the date was changed during the Haryana elections as well because a festival of Bishnoi community had come at that time. Bajwa wrote in the letter that among the four seats for which by-elections are being held, Dera Baba Nanak is a city of immense religious importance.
Bajwa stressed that the people of Punjab should be allowed to fully participate in both their religious festivals and the democratic process without any conflict or compromise.
The election commission of India announced by-elections for four assembly seats along with assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. The Polling will be held on 13 November and counting will be held on November 23.
