Chandigarh: The employees of the electricity department (PSPCL) in Punjab have joined the doctors of government hospitals in a strike, expressing their solidarity. They have all decided to go on mass leave until September 17. The Joint Forum Punjab, Bijli Karamchari Ekta Manch, and Junior Engineer Association have accused the government of not taking their demands seriously. They are concerned that the government’s lack of action will lead to delayed repairs for any electrical faults, causing inconvenience to consumers.
The leaders of the organizations have met with Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO and Power Secretary Punjab, as well as the management, but their discussions have not been successful. The leaders claim that the Punjab government and the management are unwilling to offer any support, only engaging in empty talk. They have stated that the strike will continue until their demands are met. The government is refusing to grant martyr status and provide financial assistance amounting to crores of rupees to the electricity employees who lose their lives while on duty.
