Jalandhar : This time 328 candidates are in the fray for 13 seats in Punjab for the Lok Sabha elections 2024. According to the data released by the Election Commission, there are 302 male and 26 female candidates. This figure is the highest in the last two elections. While 253 candidates were in the fray in 2014, in 2019, 278 candidates contested the elections.
At the same time, not a single woman candidate has filed nomination from Khadur Sahib, the religious seat of Punjab. Not only this, maximum 43 candidates are contesting from Ludhiana. The Election Commission has canceled 245 nominations during scrutiny. After this entire process, election symbols have now been given to the independent candidates.
The son of Beant Singh, who was main accused in assasination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has also filed his nomination for the Lok Sabha elections 2024, which has been accepted. Beant Singh’s son Sarbjit Singh is contesting elections from Faridkot (SC), which has become the seat of Khalsa star candidates. The Election Commission has given him sugarcane as the election symbol.
Amritpal, sitting in Dibrugarh jail on NSA charges, got the mike.
At the same time, in 2023, Amritpal Singh, who was sent to Dibrugarh jail after being accused of National Security Act (NSA), has been given mike as an election symbol by the Election Commission. Amritpal is contesting from Khadur Sahib, the hottest seat of Punjab. The number of Sikhs here is 75 percent and among them maximum Panthic candidates have always been elected.
This is the same seat from where Khalistan supporter Simranjit Singh Mann had contested elections in 1989 and won by 4.80 lakh votes. Amritpal Singh is being seen as a Panthic candidate. There are currently 12 cases registered against him. Of which 11 are registered in various police stations of Punjab and one case has been registered in Dibrugarh jail.
Simranjeet Singh Maan and Lakha Sidana will hold the bucket
Punjab’s regionally popular party Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) has been given the bucket symbol by the Election Commission. This time, after Simranjit Singh Mann, the second famous face from this party is Lakha Sidhana, who is contesting from Bathinda.
Simranjit Singh is contesting from Sangrur, the home district of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Simranjit Mann is also the current MP from here. Similarly, the party has fielded Lakha Sidhana as a candidate from Punjab’s VIP seat Bathinda.
