Chandigarh: Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Party is set to bring its policy to tackle the drug problem in the state. The policy will be implemented within two-three months with a focus on prevention, action, de-addiction and rehabilitation. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has constituted a state steering committee headed by Chief Secretary KAP Sinha. Its nodal officer is Principal Secretary Rahul Tiwari.
According to official sources, the policy will have a special focus on keeping adolescents and women away from drugs, as the number of users of these drugs has increased in the last few years. There are plans to revise the curriculum in high schools and colleges to prevent drug abuse and set up two more de-addiction and rehabilitation clinics for women, one of which will be set up in Ludhiana. As of now, there is such a Mukti Kendra in Kapurthala.
It is worth mentioning that in the Lok Sabha elections held last year, the ruling AAP had to face criticism from the voters as drug addiction had increased a lot, especially among adolescents, due to the easy availability of drugs. The second part of last year (2024) was dedicated to cracking down on drug traffickers. This year the focus will be on prevention, de-addiction and rehabilitation. For prevention, the School Education Department and Higher Education Department will hire master trainers whose job will be to instill fear in students about the ill-effects of drug abuse.
