The Punjab and Haryana High Court has reprimanded the government, expressing serious concern over the increasing drug addiction in the state. The court said that the youth are getting involved in theft and other crimes to fulfill their drug addiction, which shows the failure of the government to deal with this problem.
Actually, Justice Sandeep Moudgil of Punjab Haryana High Court was hearing the bail plea of the accused in the case of commercial recovery of 290 grams of heroin. While giving the verdict in this case, he also made this remark. In which he said- “The increasing drug addiction is seriously damaging the future of the country and hollowing out the youth like termites.”
Reprimanding the government, he said- “The youth moving towards crime shows the failure of the state government. The problem of drug addiction has become very serious in Punjab, which needs to be strictly controlled.”
The court expressed the need for strict action against the criminals involved in the drug trade and said that it is becoming a threat to the social structure of the entire country.
Justice Moudgil said that the court is the guardian of the citizens and it is its duty to ensure that concrete steps are taken to deal with this serious problem. Strict action should be taken against those involved in illegal drug trade, so that the future of the youth can be secured.
Bail not granted due to commercial category
The court said that this quantity falls in the commercial category, so the strict provisions of section 37 of the NDPS Act will apply. The court said that in such a situation it would not be right to grant bail to the accused. The court made it clear that serious steps will have to be taken against drug addiction so that the young generation can be saved from its addiction.
