Punjab BJP Chief Jakhar writes to ECI, seeks extension in voting hours amid heatwave

He on behalf of BJP Punjab requested that voting hours should be from 6am to 7pm.

Chandigarh: The voting on all 13 seats of Punjab will be held on June 1 during the seventh and final phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024. Meanwhile, Punjab BJP Chief Sunil Jakhar has written to the Election Commission of India seeking extension in the voting hours. He has sought extension in the voting time because of the prevailing heatwave in Punjab.

In a letter written to EC, Jakhar has requested for extension of voting hours on June 1. He wrote, “That with the final phase of General Elections to Lok Sabha scheduled for 01.06.2024, Punjab will be experiencing an intense heat wave, making it extremely challenging for voters to cast their vote during the peak sunny hours. The intense heat will pose health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children.”

He said that in order to ensure a higher voter turnout and safeguarding the public health, he on behalf of BJP Punjab requested that voting hours should be from 6am to 7pm.

He wrote, “That to ensure a higher voter turnout and safeguard public health, I, on behalf of BJP Punjab, request that the voting hours be extended to include cooler periods of day and the voting be allowed from 6 AM to 7 PM.”
