Punjab-Haryana HC dismisses petition against Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi

Former Chief Minister and Congress MP from Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat of Punjab,  Charanjit Singh Channi, has got a big relief from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Chandigarh, July 4: Former Chief Minister and Congress MP from Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat of Punjab,  Charanjit Singh Channi, has got a big relief from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The High Court dismissed the petition challenging his election.

BJP leader and lawyer Gaurav Luthra had filed a petition against Channi, alleging that he had concealed much information during the nomination and did not give the correct details of election expenses to the Election Commission. Along with this, he also allegedly did not provide information related to permission for rallies.

BJP leader and lawyer Gaurav Luthra, in his petition, citing the Representation of the People Act, had demanded from the High Court that the election of Charanjit Singh Channi be cancelled. The petition alleged that Channi hid many facts in the election affidavit and did not submit the full details of the election expenses to the Commission.

Court Proceedings and Ruling

During the hearing on Tuesday, Channi’s legal team refuted all charges, stating that:

♦The allegations were unfounded and politically motivated

♦The petitioner was not appearing for the hearings regularly

♦All statutory requirements were fulfilled during the election process

After reviewing the matter, the High Court dismissed the petition, terming it baseless, and thereby upheld Channi’s election victory.

In the hearing held on Tuesday, Channi’s lawyer rejected all the allegations and said that all the facts put forward by the opposition are baseless. The lawyer also said that the party filing the petition was not appearing in the court itself. After the hearing, the High Court dismissed the petition, considering it baseless and gave a big relief to Channi.
