Punjab Govt purchases private plant in Goindwal Sahib in Rs 1080 crore

Punjab Government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has become the first government to buy a power plant in the Private sector.

Chandigarh: In a press conference today, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that Punjab Government has purchased the Goindwal Thermal Plant. With this move, Punjab Government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has become the first government to buy a power plant in the Private sector.

CM said that the government has brought the 540 MW private GVK Goindwal Thermal Plant for Rs 1080 crore. With this, CM also announced the new name of the power plant.  The new name of the plant will be Guru Amar Das Thermal Power limited, Goindwal. Earlier the Cost of electricity production was Rs 7.8 per unit which will now cost Rs 4.5 per unit following the purchases of the power plant by the government.

CM Mann also took to X and announced the news of purchase of the power plant. In the post he said, “Today, on the first day of the year 2024, a big gift has been  given to the people of Punjab… Private Thermal Plant, Goindwal Sahib has been bought by your own government… which will save people’s money and will provide electricity at cheap rate. The agreement between the power plant and the Government is also the cheapest in the country…”

CM further said that It will be named after the third Patshah Shri Guru Amardas Ji.

Dubbing the move as new hope for Punjab, CM said “Our intention and policy is clear…it is the first government which is buying the private enterprise…otherwise the policy of the previous governments of the country and the state was to sell only…Punjab is creating a new history…”
