Punjab Police bust major illegal liquor racket; Methanol seized; smuggling network uncovered

The Punjab government has taken action against the illegal liquor trade. The police have seized a large consignment of illegal liquor.

Chandigarh, May 30: The Punjab government has taken a major action against those making illegal liquor. In an operation of about eight hours, the excise department has confiscated two trucks with Gujarat number plates filled with eighty thousand liters of ethanol, while eight people have been arrested. Four of the accused are from Bathinda, two from Uttar Pradesh and two from Nepal. The police have also seized two cars. This claim has been made by Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema. He said that a case has been registered against the accused. At the same time, there will be checking in factories of the entire area today. He said that 3.50 lakh bottles of country liquor can be made from the liquor that has been seized.

Ethanol was produced from Gurdaspur

The Finance Minister said that these trucks filled with ethanol had left from the liquor factory located in Gurdaspur. The Excise Department had received information about this. After this, our team was active. But the accused moved ahead with a complete strategy. They have been arrested from Manraj Dhaba. At the same time, this operation is still going on. Soon a big disclosure will be made by the government.

It is used to make many things

The Finance Minister said that ethanol is also present in petrol and diesel. It is also used to make desi liquor. From the quantity seized, 3 lakh 50 thousand (50 degree) bottles of desi liquor could have been made. If we talk about foreign liquor, then 2 lakh 50 thousand (75 degree) bottles of liquor are made. Sanitizer is prepared for 1 lakh 10 thousand. He said that it is also used in many other things.

600 liters of methanol was seized

On May 13 this month, more than 22 people died due to drinking alcohol in Majitha. All the people belonged to needy families. After this, the opposition also took up this matter seriously. At the same time, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann himself visited the area and announced to give ten lakh rupees to each of the affected families and a job to one member of the family. Also, action was initiated against those making illegal liquor. On the same day, Patiala Police seized 600 liters of methanol coming from Delhi, which was to be used in making liquor. Apart from this, country liquor was also caught at many places.
