Chandigarh: In bid to ensure that the Panchayat elections in Punjab are conducted peacefully, Leaves of all police officers and employees have been cancelled till 15 October. Leave will be approved only in special circumstances. Orders have been issued in this regard. Action will also be taken for breaking the rules. There are more than 80 thousand police personnel in Punjab Police.
There are 13937 village panchayats in the state at present in which elections are being conducted. A total of 1 crore 33 lakh voters will cast their votes in the elections on 15 October. 96 thousand employees have been deployed in the election. Conducting the elections in a peaceful manner is also a challenge for the government.
However, the government has made efforts at its level to ensure that the atmosphere in the villages does not deteriorate. The proposal regarding not conducting elections on party symbols has been passed in the assembly and implemented.
For the Panchayat elections, the State Election Commission has set up a control room in its office SCO No. 49 located in Sector 17-E, Chandigarh.
