Serving Punjab Police ASI Sarabjit Singh has been arrested by the Ludhiana Crime Branch in a case of immigration fraud of Rs 1.40 crore. It is alleged that Sarabjit, along with his travel agent brother Daljit Singh alias Don and accomplice Jai Jagat Joshi, sent a youth from Moga to America through an illegal route, i.e., ‘Dunki Route’.
Complainant Akash Veer Singh alleges that the accused lured him with a legal visa and work permit in the US, but then sent him through dunki route via Dubai and El Salvador.
At present, Sarabjit Singh is posted in Kapurthala Police, and the other two accused are absconding. The police are searching for them.
Complainant Akash Veer said that we were told that we would get a work visa. But on August 7, 2023, we flew to Dubai, and then we were illegally sent to El Salvador. My family had already given Rs 90 lakh, but later the agents threatened and extorted another Rs 50 lakh. Eventually, we were forced to enter the US illegally through the Mexican border.
Crime Branch arrests him
Inspector Beant Juneja of Ludhiana Crime Branch confirmed the arrest of ASI Sarabjit Singh. He has confessed to partial involvement and said that at least 7-8 FIRs are already lodged against his brother Daljit. Daljit and Joshi are absconding, and we have launched raids to search for them. Kapurthala police will be informed to initiate departmental action against Sarabjit.
A case has been registered at the Model Town police station under IPC sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), 506 (criminal intimidation), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and section 13 of the Punjab Prevention of Human Trafficking Act.
