Chandigarh: Punjab Vigilance Bureau raided a warehouse and busted a huge embezzlement of Rs 1.55 crore and seized 2 trucks loaded with 1138 sacks of rice. In this regard, the Vigilance Bureau has arrested Gopal Goyal, owner of Shiv Shakti Rice Mill, Garhshankar, District Hoshiarpur, along with two truck drivers Jagpal Singh and Sukhwinder Singh.

The Vigilance Bureau became fully active only after the Lok Sabha elections were over. Earlier, the Vigilance Bureau team had arrested two police personnel who had cheated 102 people in the name of police recruitment. Now the Vigilance has revealed this. However, it has not been made clear yet where the case has been registered. Detailed information will be shared by the government soon.

The grain was from the central government scheme

According to the vigilance, under the ‘Bharat Brand’ scheme run by the Government of India, about 70,000 metric tons of rice is being distributed to the poor families of Bathinda, Bhucho, Maur, Rampura Phul and Budhlada by the National Cooperative Consumer Federation of India.

The cost of which was around Rs 130 crore. Out of this, 1000 metric tons of rice was to be distributed in 5 kg and 10 kg bags at the rate of Rs 18.50 per kg. The tender to supply this rice to the beneficiaries in Bathinda district at the rate of Rs 29 per kg was given to Jai Jainendra firm.

Profit was to be earned by selling it in the market

The Vigilance Bureau had received information from reliable sources that an attempt was being made to embezzle rice worth Rs 3.40 crore of the beneficiaries. Acting on the information, the Vigilance Bureau team seized 2 trucks loaded with 1138 sacks of rice, which were to be sent to Hamzapur town of Fatehabad, but the trader firm was preparing to sell the rice directly to the vendors.

Because of this, neither the rice was cleaned nor was it put in the sacks. Investigation has revealed that the said firm wanted to embezzle the government stock reserved for the poor people by selling it at a high price of Rs 34 per kilogram.
