Punjab Weather update: Yellow alert for rain, temperature hovers at normal

An orange alert has been issued in the state in the next 48 hours and there are chances of rain in more than half of the state.

A yellow alert has been issued for rain in Punjab once again today. Light rain was seen in Pathankot and Bathinda on the previous day, while other states remained dry. Due to which there is not much change in the temperature. The maximum temperature increased by only 0.1 degree, which is considered close to normal. At the same time, the temperature in Bathinda has been recorded at 37.9 degrees.

According to the Meteorological Department, there is a yellow alert for rain in Pathankot, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar and Mohali today. There is a possibility of moderate rain here, while the weather will be normal in other states. But from tomorrow, the temperature is changing again. An orange alert has been issued in the state in the next 48 hours and there are chances of rain in more than half of the state.

Monsoon in Punjab

Monsoons in Punjab have remained above normal this time. Monsoons were kind in the month of June as well, while now there are chances of good rain in July as well. According to the data of the Meteorological Department, monsoon and pre-monsoon activity was seen in the state from June 1. From June 1 to July 4, 84.6 mm rainfall has been recorded in the state, which is 20 percent more than the normal 70.2 mm.

Effect of rainfall in dams 

Bhakra Dam

The effect of better rainfall in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab is also visible in the dams. The full water level of Bhakra Dam located on Sutlej River is 1685 feet and its total storage capacity is 5.918 million acre feet (MAF). Currently, the water level of the dam has been recorded at 1582.66 feet, in which 2.642 MAF water is stored. This is 44.64 percent of the total capacity. Last year on the same date, the water level was 1590.32 feet and water storage was 2.82 MAF. On the morning of June 4, the inflow of water in the dam was 45,205 cusecs while the discharge was 25,093 cusecs.

Pong Dam

The full filling limit of Pong Dam built on the Beas River is 1400 feet, and its total capacity is 6.127 MAF. The water level on Friday morning was 1320.62 feet. In which 2.199 MAF water is stored, which is 35.89 percent of the total capacity. A year ago on this day, the water level was recorded at 1306.74 feet and storage was 1.749 MAF. On Friday, the inflow of water was 29,079 cusecs and the discharge was 18,505 cusecs.

Theim Dam

The full water filling level of Thein Dam built on Ravi river is 1731.98 feet and its storage capacity is considered to be 2.663 MAF. The water level on June 4 was 1655.79 feet, in which 1.449 MAF water is filled, which is 54.41 percent of the total capacity. Last year on this day, the dam level was 1646.14 feet and water storage was 1.332 MAF. Today, 8,476 cusecs of water arrived in the dam, while 11,225 cusecs of water was released.

Comparison of the three dams clearly shows that this year the water storage level is slightly lower than last year. But considering the speed of inflow, it is likely to improve in the next few weeks.
