Fatehgarh Sahib : Two freight trains collided at around 4 am today in Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab. The engine of one of these overturned and collided with a passenger train passing on the adjacent track. Two loco pilots of the freight train were injured in the accident, who were referred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala.

This accident was similar to the one that happened in Balasore, Odisha last year. In that accident, another train hit a train already standing on the railway track. During collision, a third train was passing by, also became a victim of the accident. More than 293 people were died and more than 1,000 people were injured in that rail accident.

The outline of this accident in Fatehgarh Sahib is similar, but due to slow speed, a major accident was averted.

Accident at DFCC’s New Sirhind station

According to the information, a coal laden train was standing at New Sirhind station of Dedicated Freight Corridor, which was to be sent to Ropar. On the same track, another coal laden train came from behind, which collided with the already parked coal freight train from behind. Due to this, the engine of the freight train overturned.

Meanwhile, the special summer train (04681) going from Kolkata to Jammu Tawi left from Ambala to Ludhiana. When this train reached near New Sirhind station, its speed was slow. During this time two freight trains collided. When the engine overturned after the collision, it collided with the passenger train.

Partial damage to passenger train
The speed of the passenger train was slow, so the driver immediately stopped the train and a major accident averted. However, the train has been partially damaged. At the same time, the condition of the track is bad. After the accident, the passenger train has been sent to Rajpura by attaching another engine. Also, the work of repairing the track has been started.

The collision was so strong that even the bogies of the freight train climbed over each other. After the accident, railway employees reached the spot. They broke the glass of the engine and took out the loco pilots trapped inside. From there, they were taken to the hospital.

One loco pilot has a head injury, the other has a back injury

Dr. Irwin Preet Kaur at the Civil Hospital in Fatehgarh Sahib has told that two loco pilots were brought to her after the rail accident. They have been identified as Vikas Kumar and Himanshu Kumar, residents of Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Vikas has a head injury and Himanshu has a back injury. Both of them were referred to Patiala after giving first aid.

Preliminary investigation on these aspects

After the accident, the railway department is investigating various aspects. The main point of investigation is that when a freight train was already standing on the line, how did another train come on the same line? Also, if the train got the signal to come on the same line, then why could the driver not see the other train standing in front.

Investigation is being done regarding the negligence behind the accident. On the other hand, the Ambala to Ludhiana up line has come to a standstill. Every train passing through here has been diverted. Senior officials of railways, GRP and RPF, including the DRM of Ambala division, have also reached the spot and investigating the matter
