Relief to Punjab Government from NGT; paddy sowing will be possible from June 1

After this decision of the NGT, there is no legal obstacle to transplanting paddy from June 1.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has refused to interfere in the decision of the Punjab government regarding the transplantation of paddy. After this decision of the NGT, there is no legal obstacle to transplanting paddy from June 1.

The Punjab government has already issued a notification to start transplanting paddy from June 1. Chandigarh advocate HC Arora had challenged these orders of the Punjab government in the National Green Tribunal.

He had demanded the cancellation of the government’s notification and postponement of paddy transplantation. However, the NGT is not satisfied with the facts given in the petition.

It was said in the petition that, according to section three of the Punjab Preservation of Sub-Soil Water Act 2008, no farmer is allowed to sow seedlings before May 10 as per the farming calendar. This petition was filed based on the Chief Minister’s statement in the press.

But no such news was found on record. The tribunal said that the petitioner should demonstrate the impact of the change in date on the environment and the groundwater level. There was no such authentic material in the petition.

The Punjab government has made arrangements for electricity and water for paddy transplantation from June 1. A meeting of electricity department officials has been held regarding this. After many years, paddy sowing starts from June 1.

Because last year, transplantation started from June 11, and since 2009, transplantation has never started from June 1. However, environmentalists had objected to this decision. They called it a loss-making deal. Also, they talked about the misuse of underground water.
