Chandigarh: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Maan towards women empowerment, Punjab government has spent nearly Rs 1548 crore on free bus travel facility availed by women across Punjab.
Giving more information in this regard, Transport Minister S. Laljit Singh Bhullar said today that during the 28 months of his tenure, Punjab Roadways/Punbus and PRTC have spent 1,548.25 crores to ensure free travel for women in buses. He said that under this revolutionary scheme, 32.46 crore trips have been provided to women due to which there has been a significant increase in the direction of empowering women across Punjab.
Sharing detailed information, the Cabinet Minister said that from March 2022 to March 2023, a total of 664.63 crore rupees were spent on 14.29 crore trips to women, while during the financial year 2023-2024, 14.90 crore trips were provided to women by spending 694.64 crore rupees. He said that during the current financial year till July 15, 2024, 3.27 crore trips have been provided to women with a cost of Rs 188.98 crore.
The Cabinet Minister said that this important plan was planned by the Chief Minister. The Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government is a testament to the multifaceted approach to social welfare and gender equality. S. Bhullar said that by removing financial barriers to travel for women. He added that this initiative is enabling them to have easy access to education, employment, healthcare, and other essential facilities.
The Transport Minister said that the free bus travel facility for women highlights the vision of the Punjab government for a progressive and equitable Punjab, where every citizen can contribute to the development and prosperity of the state without any gender bias.
