Bathinda, May 30: Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal visited AIIMS Bathinda to enquire about the well-being of those injured in the blast that took place in a fireworks factory at Fatuhiwala-Singhewala village in Lambi.
Notably, In a horrifying incident that shook Punjab’s Muktsar district in the early hours of today, a powerful explosion at a licensed firecracker manufacturing unit in Fatuhiwala village, Lambi, claimed the lives of four workers and left 27 others injured. Rescue operations were underway late into the morning, as several workers were feared to be still trapped under debris.
The blast occurred around 1 am when nearly 50 labourers, many of whom had just completed their night shift, were resting inside the factory premises. The sudden explosion triggered panic and chaos, with parts of the double-storey structure collapsing in the aftermath. Fire tenders and police teams were rushed to the site, and rescue efforts began immediately. However, with rooms on the first floor also impacted, officials feared the toll could rise.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Sri Muktsar Sahib, Akhil Chaudhary, shed light on the blast and said, “…Four people died when the building collapsed following the explosion. Rescue operations are underway and the injured have been admitted to the hospital…”
He added that the Police will carry out the necessary investigation. When asked about the cause of the blast, he said, “It seems to be something related to the firecracker material, but it is subject to further investigation. The forensic team will come and examine, then something can be said with certainty.”
“The labourers recently joined the factory…They were outsiders (not from Punjab),” the SSP said. He added that there were two units- manufacturing and packaging- operating there.
Jaspal Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Lambi, said, “Late last night, a blast occurred at a firecracker factory…Almost 50 labourers work in the factory…Four bodies have been recovered, and 27 injured have been admitted to the hospital.”
Eyewitnesses said the intensity of the blast was such that it was heard several kilometres away. The local administration has called for an audit of all such factories in the area to prevent similar mishaps in the future. The incident has sparked concern across the region, reviving the long-standing debate over safety compliance in fireworks factories.
