Chandigarh: The mayor election of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation will be videographed. Additionally, retired Supreme Court judges will be present as independent observers during the election.
There will be a hearing in the Supreme Court today on the Chandigarh Mayor election. The court will give its decision on the election methods. Aam Aadmi Party leader Kuldeep Kumar had filed a petition for fair elections citing the irregularities that happened last year. The election for the Mayor is to be held on January 30.
Last Friday, a bench of Supreme Court judges Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh had sought a reply from the Chandigarh administration on whether an independent observer could be appointed to ensure that the voting was conducted freely and impartially. The court said that Kuldeep Kumar’s concern is that voters should get free and fair choices during elections.
The court had said that a notice should be issued for the limited purpose of appointing a retired judge for the mayoral election to be held on January 30. The election process will be conducted under his supervision. The court has clarified that the election process will continue in the meantime.
Citing the irregularities in the last election
Advocate Gurminder Singh, appearing for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), on Friday told the Supreme Court on behalf of Kuldeep Kumar how Returning Officer Anil Masih had declared the BJP candidate winner by selectively destroying ballot papers.
After this, Aam Aadmi Party candidate Kuldeep Kumar appealed against this decision in the Supreme Court, on which the court overturned the decision of the Returning Officer and declared Kuldeep Kumar the winner of the mayor election.
