Amritsar : In the executive meeting of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the tenure of Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh of Sri Damdama Sahib has been terminated. Giani Jagtar Singh has been made the acting Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib. The meeting was held at Teja Singh Samudra Hall, SGPC headquarters in Amritsar, which was chaired by SGPC chief Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami.
In the meeting, the report of the committee investigating Giani Harpreet Singh has been accepted. After which a decision has been taken to terminate the services of Giani Harpreet Singh. During this, some SGPC members also opposed the decision, but the decision was taken by majority.
Giani Harpreet Singh was already suspended by the SGPC and the process of disciplinary action against him is underway. The SGPC had formed an inquiry committee to investigate the alleged breach of duties and administrative irregularities of Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh.

Three members opposed
A total of 13 members participated in the meeting. Among them, Amrik Singh, Paramjit Singh Raipur and Jaswant Singh of the opposing group opposed the decisions of the SGPC. Paramjit Singh Raipur informed that he and the other two members had expressed their opposition, in which the decision of Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh was mentioned. Giani Raghbir Singh had clearly said that taking action against the Jathedar is not the jurisdiction of the SGPC and action should be taken within limits.

Called a political decision
The opposition members have called this action politically motivated. The three members said that this action has been taken against Giani Harpreet Singh for the decision of 2 December. On 2 December, he had taken a strict decision, which was in the interest of the sect.
Investigation into the family dispute had begun
It is noteworthy that Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Sri Muktsar Sahib, had claimed that he was married to the Jathedar’s sister-in-law. He had filed a complaint against the Jathedar before the SGPC President on December 16, 2024.
He had alleged that the Jathedar interfered in his married life, which led to their divorce. He claimed that the Jathedar used his influence to harass him and embroiled him in court cases. He further alleged that he was an employee of the SGPC but lost his job and went into depression.
The meeting of the Jathedars was to be held on 28 January
To discuss the issue of Giani Harpreet Singh, Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh of Sri Akal Takht Sahib had called a meeting of Jathedars of all five Takhts on January 28. But Giani Raghbir Singh postponed this meeting. But, he has said that this meeting will be called again after returning from abroad.
