Special Mohali Court sentences 9 Arms Smugglers; 6 get Life imprisonment, 3 get ten years each

Six of them have been sentenced to life imprisonment and three have been sentenced to 10 years each.

A special NIA court in Mohali has convicted and sentenced a total of nine accused in a case. Six of them have been sentenced to life imprisonment and three have been sentenced to 10 years each.

The case of the accused arrested in the case of illegal import of weapons through drones was heard in the special NIA court. After hearing the arguments of the public prosecutor and the defense, the NIA sentenced Akashdeep Singh alias Akash Sandhu, Balwant Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Balbir Singh Binda, Man Singh and Gurdev Singh, named in the case, to life imprisonment under sections 120B, 121A, 122 and other sections. Thus, Shubhdeep Singh, Sajanpreet Singh and Romandeep Singh alias Roman have been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

The NIA had registered a case against the accused under sections 120B, 121, 122, 489B, 489C, 379 of the IPC, sections 13, 16, 17, 18, 182, 23, 38 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, sections 25(11), 25(111), 25(12), 27(2) of the Arms Act and sections 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act.

On September 22, 2019, Inspector Inderdeep Singh of Counter Intelligence Amritsar received confidential information that Gurmeet Singh alias Bagga alias Doctor (who is currently living in Germany) from Hoshiarpur was in touch with Khalistan Zindabad Force members Ranjit Singh alias Neeta and Man Singh and they were in touch with each other through social media and mobile phones. All of them were planning to re-invigorate the terrorist movement in Punjab and India.

According to the chargesheet, he was recruiting youth to carry out terrorist activities and smuggling arms and ammunition. He was also receiving funds from different countries. Akashdeep alias Akash was lodged with Man Singh in Amritsar jail. Man Singh influenced Akashdeep Singh and prepared him to work towards the Khalistan movement and carry out terrorist activities in Punjab. Akashdeep Singh, who was released on bail from Amritsar Jail, was planning to smuggle a consignment of arms, ammunition, FICN sent by drone from Pakistan to India by Ranjit Singh alias Neeta.
