Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has taken a tough stand on the students of class VIII in government schools of Punjab and Chandigarh not getting books even after half the session has passed. The High Court has issued a notice to the Punjab government and the Chandigarh administration and directed them to file a reply within two days.
If the reply is not filed, the Principal Secretary of the School Education Department of Punjab and the Director of Education of Chandigarh will have to appear in person in the court.
In the petition filed by Chandigarh resident Deepti Singh, advocate Ranjan Lakhanpal said that the government claims free education till the eighth, but the ground reality is the opposite. The petition stated that even after half the session, the students of government schools have not received books, making it difficult for poor students to compete with the children of private schools.
The petitioner also argued that the Constitution guarantees equal opportunities to all citizens, but how will the students of government schools be able to progress without books? In view of this serious situation, the High Court has sought an immediate reply from the Punjab government and the UT administration.
Keeping in mind the seriousness of the matter, the High Court has directed to file the reply by October 4 and said that delay in this matter is not acceptable.
