New Delhi: The Supreme Court will today talk to farmer leader Jagjit Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike for 33 days regarding the law guaranteeing the minimum support price (MSP) of crops. For this, Dallewal will join the Supreme Court hearing from the Khanauri border through video conferencing.
Yesterday, Friday, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia of the vacation bench of the Supreme Court sought a response from the Punjab government during the hearing. The Supreme Court was hearing a substantive petition regarding the non-implementation of its orders.
Yesterday the Supreme Court granted permission to file a contempt of court case against the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) of Punjab over farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s hunger Strike.
Dallewal has been on a hunger strike since November 26. His health has significantly deteriorated at the Khanauri border, leading to a petition being submitted to the Supreme Court regarding his condition.
The court acknowledged the petition and issued a notice to the Punjab Government. During a subsequent hearing, the Supreme Court directed the Chief Secretary and DGP to take steps to ensure Dallewal’s hospitalization and to end his hunger strike. However, the Punjab Government did not ensure his hospitalization. As a result, the Supreme Court issued a contempt notice to the Chief Secretary and DGP of Punjab. The court’s double bench has ordered both officials to appear virtually during the hearing scheduled for today
