Patiala: The meeting of the 7-member committee constituted by Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh of Sri Akal Takht Sahib is going to be held again in Patiala today. But now there has been a ruckus before this meeting. Now Kirpal Singh Badungar has offered to resign from the committee. Just yesterday, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has resigned.
Kirpal Singh Badungar has sent his resignation to Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and has demanded that he be removed from this post. Before today’s meeting, two rounds of meetings have been held and they have been inconclusive.
At the same time, the SGPC core committee is yet to take a decision on the resignation of Pradhan Dhami, but along with this resignation, he had also expressed his desire to leave the responsibility of the 7-member committee. Today it remains to be seen whether Advocate Dhami will be a part of the 7-member committee meeting or not. Whether he is present in this meeting or not, even after this, everyone’s eyes are fixed on what decision is taken for the Akali Dal.
Only 5 members left in the committee
The main purpose of this committee is to monitor the new membership process. After the resignations of Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami and Professor Kirpal Singh Badungar were submitted, the committee comprised Iqbal Singh Jhundha, Manpreet Singh Ayali, Gurpratap Singh Wadala, Santa Singh Umedpuri, and Satwant Kaur. However, a decision is yet to be taken on both the resignations.
The committee was formed on 2 December
On December 2, 2024, Akal Takht Sahib had pronounced religious punishment on SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and other leaders, after which this committee was formed to change the leadership of the party. The committee has been directed to complete the membership process within six months and select the new president and other office bearers of the party.
The committee became active after speaking repeatedly
The Akali Dal had earlier refused to accept this committee formed by Sri Akal Takht Sahib citing legal hurdles. But Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh of Sri Akal Takht Sahib remained adamant about the non-existence of this committee and the first meeting of this committee was called on 10 February.
It is expected that a decision is to be taken in today’s meeting on the membership campaign conducted so far by the Akali Dal.
