Tarn Taran, May 15: Under the campaign being run by the Punjab Police to curb cross-border drug smuggling, a major success has been achieved in the Indo-Pak border district of Tarn Taran. Police has arrested an active drug smuggler named Amarjot Singh alias Jota from Jhabal area. 5 kg of heroin has been recovered from him, which is said to be worth crores of rupees in the international market.
DGP Gaurav Yadav informed that the initial investigation of the Tarn Taran police has revealed that Amarjot Singh had links with foreign drug handlers. He was part of an international drug syndicate which smuggled drugs into Punjab via Pakistan. Police suspect that Amarjot was an important link in the supply of drugs in the state. Many youths were getting drugs through him.
Case registered under the NDPS Act, intensive investigation underway
A case has been registered against the accused under the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act at Thana City, Tarn Taran. The police is now thoroughly investigating his forward and backwards linking (i.e. from whom he used to take drugs and to whom he used to supply them). For this, the accused is being questioned, and forensic investigation of his mobile and digital devices is also being done.
The police are investigating call details
According to police sources, after the arrest of Amarjot Singh, the investigating agencies are now investigating his call details and travel history so that his masters sitting abroad and the local network can be exposed. More arrests are likely to be made in this case soon.
