Abohar: On Thursday the heavy rain in Abohar brought relief to the city dwellers, but it became a disaster for some people. The roofs of the houses of these people living in slum settlements collapsed due to rain, which not only caused heavy loss to them but also created a problem of living in the future.
Sukhdev, son of Kartar Singh, resident of Indira Nagari Street No. 7, Abohar, said that his entire family works as labourers. Late last night, he was sleeping in the courtyard when suddenly the roof of his room collapsed, due to which the items kept in the room—the fridge, TV, cooler, cupboard, and other items—got buried in the debris, and he suffered huge financial loss. Due to financial constraints, he no longer has money to build a room.
Apart from this, Asha Devi, a resident of Panjpeer Nagar, said that yesterday, when they were sleeping in the room, the roof of the verandah fell due to rain, and cracks appeared in their rooms, which can fall at any time. Now she is afraid of sleeping in the room because she has small children.
Similarly, Kamala Devi, wife of Bablu, a resident of Sant Nagar Street No. 3, said that yesterday evening her mother-in-law had gone to work and got stuck in someone’s house due to rain. During this time, the roof of her room suddenly fell, causing damage to her. If her mother-in-law had come home on time, the roof could have fallen on her too.
It is worth noting that yesterday, the roof of a family living in Dashmesh Nagar also collapsed due to rain. In just two days, the houses of four families have suffered heavy damage.
