Tobacco consumption will be banned at all polling booths in Punjab: Sibin C

He said that consumption of cigarettes, bidis and other tobacco products will be strictly prohibited at all polling booths.

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C has declared all polling booths in the state as tobacco-free in view of Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

He said that consumption of cigarettes, bidis and other tobacco products will be strictly prohibited at all polling booths.

He said that to ensure this ban on tobacco consumption at polling booths, the Presiding Officer of each polling booth has been appointed as the Nodal Officer.

The Chief Electoral Officer said that this important step highlights the commitment of the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer to promote healthy lifestyle as well as ensure a safe and constructive environment for voters.

He said that the objective of declaring polling booths as tobacco-free zones is to protect non-users from exposure to tobacco smoke and encourage people to maintain good health.

He said that this initiative is also part of the comprehensive public health campaign and efforts being made at legal and other levels to reduce tobacco use and overcome the diseases associated with it such as cancer, heart disease, serious lung disease and blindness etc.
