Amritsar: Senior Akali leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia was on Wednesday arrested by a team of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau after a raid on his residence in Amritsar.
Vigilance has raided senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in Punjab. On Wednesday morning, 15 officers reached his Green Avenue house in Amritsar. Vigilance has not issued any official statement about the case in which the raid was conducted.
According to sources, Vigilance SSP Lakhbir Singh himself is present at Majithia’s house. He may also be arrested for further investigation.
A spokesperson for the government said the raid has been underway as part of the Bhagwant Mann government’s biggest ongoing action against drugs. A team of 30 Vigilance personnel, comprising senior officials, reached the residence when Majithia and his family were present there.
Former legislator Majithia, who is the brother-in-law of Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Badal, had moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2022 after a Mohali trial court dismissed his anticipatory bail petition in a case under the NDPS Act registered on December 20, 2021.
In a 49-page FIR filed by the state police Crime Branch at the Mohali police station, the SAD leader has been booked under sections 25, 27A and 29 of the NDPS Act.
In his plea, Majithia had termed the case a result of “political vendetta” and argued that there was no credible and legally admissible material against him.
The court, however, had granted an interim bail but allowed the Special Investigation Team to interrogate Majithia.
After the raid, Bikram Majithia released a video. In which he is seen arguing with the officers. Majithia’s wife, Ganiv Kaur, alleged that the Vigilance officers forcefully entered their house.

Majithia in the video said, “They did not find anything against me in the false drug case, now it is preparing to register a new false case against me. Today a team led by the SSP of Vigilance raided my place.”
He further said, “Bhagwant Mann ji, understand this, no matter how many pamphlets you distribute, neither will I be afraid nor will your government be able to suppress my voice. I have always spoken about the issues of Punjab and will continue to do so. I have full faith in the eternal God, Guru Sahib. Truth will ultimately triumph.”
