Chandigarh, April 27: Though there is a ban on the use of plastic bags but it is only in the government files. There is also a law to impose a fine on those who use plastic bags. However, the enforcement of the law is also not very effective. The use of plastic bags is common, especially in vegetable markets and by vendors
To put an end to the plastic menace, a student of the 11th class of local Strawberry Field School, Vivianna Shekhar, has come forward. She has started a public campaign against the use of plastic bags. She moves about the neighbourhood and in adjoining areas, especially in the vegetable markets, to educate people about the harmful effects of plastic bags.
How such bags block sewerage systems and also spoil the community places. Vivianna is not only confined to educating people against the use of plastic bags. She also encourages people to use cloth bags. She started the campaign against plastic bags about a year ago. Today, she held a campaign against the use of plastic bags in Sector 40 and distributed bags among 600 people in front of the vegetable market.
“Earlier, we started collecting plastic bags from parks.” Vivianna said that for the last year, whenever I used to see plastic bags scattered around here and there, I used to feel bad about that. First, I started collecting plastic bags from the surroundings of my house and nearby parks. After that, I planned on how to stop its use and then prepared a cloth bag on which was written “I have no plastic in my hand”.
Later, this became a main slogan and punch line of my campaign against the use of plastic bags. Now, I hold all my campaigns against the use of plastic bags under this slogan, The purpose of reaching out to people is that the person, who uses this bag, is to educate them about the harmful effects of usage of such bags.
About 15 to 20 members of my family and friends have joined me in this campaign. The campaign started on a very small scale, but gradually it started picking up, and in due course, I am expecting that more and more people will join it. “Today, I got a very good response from people. They actively participated in the campaign and showed a lot of interest in it”, said Vivianna.
I am not alone,
People aware to not use plastic bags but is also collecting funds from people by going door to door. There are many people who make contributions voluntarily because they know that the campaign I have launched is for the welfare of our people, our community and country. “It is our duty to save the mother earth from the menace of plastic bags. I am contributing my bit to do so”, she said with a lot of self assurance.
